This morning, by 11 ish, I went to have breakfast in my favourite cafe, right in front of the beach, and as usual, I had a fresh raspberry juice.
As I said before, Chile and Peru are involved in a political conflict, mainly due to the fact that Peru doesnt want to respect the treaties of 1952 and 1954 that established the geographical boundaries of both countries as well as water territories.
Basically, what this country wants to do, is expand its territory, going through Chilean waters and off course, Chile doesnt want to.Yesterday, was held a conference in Arica ( North of Chile), that diplomats from all over S.A attended. And Ecuador said it would back Chile, and that what Peru wants to undertake is completely illegal.Bolivia hasnt entered the conflict yet, but they are less then welcomed to do so, since they 've always been the eternal allies of Peru.Bolivia has no coasts, which doesnt facilitate transport and economic activities. So what they would like, is to get a portion of territory from Chile to have an access to the sea.
It isnt the first time that Chile is involved in a conflict with Peru and Bolivia.Last time was in the 19 th century and Chile won the war and expanded its territory.Since then, they' ve always been rivals.
But if you start listening the news, you ll see that most S.A countries are pretty fucked up and have many internal problems and conflicts with their neighbours.
Like, elections are to be held soon in Bolivia, and one of the candidates has threatened all the others, saying that if he doesnt win, he'll kill all of them.
The military base is here, in vina where I live. And this morning all the military helicopters were out, probably exercising.
Well this is one of the thing I have to know for my history oral exam in january.
Voila.

all 'too too postmodern'
like the people on the plane whose landing gear wouldn't work watching news coverage of themselves crashing on the tv screens on the back of the seats.

As I recall, Ecuador lost considerable territory to Peru in the 1940's too. Man, you'd think people would find better ways to settle issues by now.

yeah, i know there are some sort of rivalries in between Argentina and Chile. They say that chilean girls are the uggliest here on the continent and Chileans say that argentinians are just sooooo arrogant. And there are so many boundaries conflicts......

erm yeah, chile might have its first female president tho the latest surveys deny that.

ahah, thats true, but you know its the same here.
They have this love/hate relationship with Europeans that they want to copy and at the same time they believe that they are better than them.
The bureaucracy is awful here.
Chileans believe that they are the most economically advanced country of the continent, when really its just such a laugh. There is poverty everywhere, so many social problems but everyone seems to ignore that.
